I had photographer Barry Hill in town this week, and on Tuesday he and I joined Dennis and Bryce Keating of Southern California aboard Capt. Shane Klinger’s boat for a bumpy ride to the Pinnacle. At this time of year, you can expect the king run to be tapering off pretty dramatically, but right off the bat, we found ourselves in a school of chinook. This was the first trip to Alaska for Dennis and Bryce, and believe me, they will never forget this trip. They each landed a nice king salmon, with Dennis’ fish topping twenty five pounds and Bryce’s well over twenty. Our first three strikes were kings, and before the day was over, we added a bunch of silvers and a few pinks to our limit of chinook and halibut. For a charter with Shane Klinger, contact The Cedars Lodge.
Barry and I hit the water near Clover Pass Resort on Wednesday. The fishing has remained light in that area, and we picked up one silver and two pinks that morning.
I have family coming into town this week, and I hope to get them out on the water a couple of times while they’re here. Check out the highlights of their first fishing trip to Alaska next Thursday on another Ketchikan Fishing Minute.
