What to pack for your Alaska trip

Alaska River FishingDepending on what time of year you are planning your Alaskan fishing trip is going to determine what you bring to a full extent, but for our late spring and summer visitors take a moment to read the recommended must include items.

If you do happen to forget something, Silverking Lodge does have a small gift shop, but a quick trip into Ketchikan and you can pick up just about anything you could ask for. Many of our guest are always pleasantly surprised at the world class shopping they find in downtown Ketchikan. This little town is a stopping off point to the Alaskan Cruise Ships.

Warm Clothes – Our summer temperatures may seem chilly to you if you are from a warmer, drier climate. An early morning breeze on the ocean can be quite cool and uncomfortable if you are not properly dressed. We recommend the “layered” approach that allows you to add layers or take away layers as the temperature and wind change. More than anything we want you to be prepared and comfortable during your stay with us.

Footwear – Waterproof or water resistant footwear is highly recommended. Even on dry days, feet have a tendency to get wet in the boat. A light pair of rubber boots or waterproof hiking boots are adequate. An extra pair of tennis or deck shoes will be useful around the lodge and on the dock.

Raingear - We recommend good raingear to all of our guests. Because Ketchikan gets over 13 feet of rain a year it is likely it may rain while you are here. We do have raingear available for use at the lodge and can generally outfit all of our guests. Of course, you are welcome to bring your own raingear if you would like. Waterproof gloves are recommended for our guests that are prone to cold hands.

Personal Items – You will need to bring your own personal toiletry items. If you require medication please remember to have an adequate amount for your stay. While we are only 25 miles from Ketchikan we ask that our guests be aware of our remote location.

Personal choice tackle – Many fishermen have their own secret success formula that requires certain bait or tackle. If you have such secrets, you may want to bring some of your own gear. Basic tackle like salmon and halibut leaders, and weights are provided as part of your fishing package.

Cameras – Whatever you do, do not forget your camera. This is your weapon against all those friends that don’t believe your fish stories.
